This is not a willpower failure. It is the intended outcome of a system designed, with extraordinary precision, to convert your attention into advertising revenue. The algorithmic feed is the most sophisticated behavioral engineering apparatus ever deployed at scale, and it is running on your brain every time you pick up your phone.

This essay is a deeply researched case against that system. It synthesizes neuroscience, workplace cognition research, platform architecture documentation, and the emerging empirical literature on epistemic degradation to argue a single thesis: algorithmic feeds are structurally incompatible with knowledge work, and the alternative is intentional curation. The critical observation is that the optimization target across all of these systems is some variant of engagement, not comprehension, not satisfaction, not long-term utility. When ranking improvements produce measurable lifts in views and time spent, the platform celebrates. Whether the user left the session more informed, more capable, or more anxious is not part of the objective function.

This is not neutral sorting

A chronological feed shows you what was published, in order. An algorithmic feed shows you what a machine-learning model predicts will keep you on the platform longest. These are fundamentally different architectures with fundamentally different cognitive consequences.

The wanting-liking dissociation

Engagement is the wrong optimization target

The core architectural flaw is the optimization function. Recommender systems are designed to maximize the immediate probability that a user will click, like, share, or maintain prolonged dwell time. This mathematical optimization exploits short-term impulses at the expense of long-term utility. User preference. When Twitter introduced algorithmic curation as the default in 2016, only 2% of users opted out. The honest assessment: the choice is not between a pristine RSS experience and a corrupt algorithm. It is between different systems of trade-offs, each with distinct failure modes. The question is which failure modes are acceptable for your goals.

We're not arguing algorithms have zero value

What to do instead: intentional curation

This isn't about nostalgia or Luddism. It's about rebuilding your information architecture on open, user-controlled foundations that align with how knowledge work actually functions.

Digital Minimalism.
